40th birthday gift

A 40th birthday gift from the people who know them best

A 40th birthday memory book for your wife or husband, a sister or a best friend, made from the messages and photographs of the people around them: family, the oldest friends and the newer ones, and the people they work with. You share one link, we give it shape, and it’s printed as a hardcover for you to give them.

For the person who says they don’t want anything

By forty, most people have stopped writing birthday lists and started saying “honestly, nothing”. What they’d never ask for is everyone’s words in one place: what a brother remembers from when they were small, what the oldest friend saw in them at twenty, what their colleagues would say if anyone asked. A 40th birthday book of memories puts it all between two covers, each piece with the name of the person who wrote it. Warm, sentimental where it wants to be, and funny wherever your people are.

One link, and everyone can add

You set the book up in a few minutes: their name, the birthday, the chapters. Then you share one link however suits your friends and family, whether that’s the group chat, an email, or a printed sheet with a code to scan. People write a message, or speak one if they’d rather not type, and add photographs. Nobody needs an account or an app. If a parent or an old friend won’t go near a link, you can add their message for them.

Help for people who don’t know what to say

Most people want to write something good and don’t know where to begin. The page they write on offers ideas to start from, and help with shaping what they’ve written if they ask for it. You can also sort people into groups, such as family, old friends and work, each with its own link and its own prompts. A few lines is plenty. A longer letter gets the room it needs.

Forty years, in chapters

The book starts with chapters that follow a life: Childhood, School years, Early adulthood, Career, Family life, Recent years, and Now. Rename any of them, take out what doesn’t fit, and add the ones only you would think of: the band, the house that took five years to finish, the dog.

Everything people send arrives on the board, an online page where messages and photographs gather, and you decide where each piece goes in the book. The board stays online for 10years, and ordering the book doesn’t close it.

Kept a surprise, if you want it to be

The board is private unless you choose to open it. People can still write, and only you read what arrives. The invitation is yours to edit, so you can ask everyone to keep it quiet until the day.

A real book, arranged by you

The book lays itself out as a first draft. You move things, take things out, and choose the cover photograph from what people sent. You see every page, and nothing is printed until you approve the book. On the front: a large 40 and the day they were born. It’s a square hardcover on 200gsm silk paper, printed when you order it and posted to the address you give.

There’s a board fee when you set it up, and you pay for the book when you order it.

Questions

Will people really add something?

The easier it is, the more people add, so there’s one link, nothing to install, and ideas on the page to begin from. Some will write a page; some will send one photograph with a line under it. Both belong in the book. There are no automatic reminders, so any nudge comes from you, and you choose when to stop taking messages. Nobody is ever shown who hasn’t written.

Will it arrive in time for the birthday?

Give it room. Start the book a few weeks before the birthday, so everyone has time to add something, then order when it’s ready. Printing usually takes about 4 days. Delivery then usually takes 3–5 working days to the UK and Ireland, 5–7 to the US and Australia, and 7–10 to Singapore. You’ll see a delivery estimate before you order.

How much of the work falls to me?

Less than you’d think. You set it up and share the link; the book puts itself together as things arrive. What’s left is the part only you can do: reading it, moving things where they belong, and deciding it’s ready.
